On January 5, 2024, a collaborative effort by Rotary Club Pune Camp, RCP Shivajinagar, RCP Lokmanyanagar, RCP Downtown, RCP Bavdhan Elite, RC Khadki, RC Pradhikaran, RC Chinchwad, and the District DEI Team led to the organization of a DEI District Event. The primary objective was to sensitize people about the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) community, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and awareness as an essential aspect of recognizing their humanity.
The event featured distinguished guest speakers, including Bindumadhav Khire, a renowned gay activist, Ms. Uttara Jadhav, a proud mother of a gay child, and Umang Sheth, an LGBTQ activist and founder of the Hugging Club. DEI Chairperson Tina Ratra shared insights into Rotary District 3131's initiative to integrate LGBTQ individuals into the mainstream.
Held at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Law College Road, the sessions drew a fully packed audience of 100 Rotarians, Rotractors, and guests.
As a tangible step towards support, Rotary Club Pune Camp is in the process of establishing a sustainable LGBTQ counseling center. This center aims to provide services such as free legal aid, parent counseling, children counseling, employment opportunities, entrepreneurship development opportunities, health check-up camps, and assistance for those individuals abandoned by their families.
Benefiting a total of 100 participants, including Rotarians, Rotractors, and guests, the project cost amounted to Rs. 50,000. This initiative stands as a testament to Rotary's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a more inclusive and understanding community.
