The Ram Nadi (River) Rejuvenation Sustainability Project is an initiative by the Rotary Club of Pune Kothrud (RCPK) under the Chairmanship of Rtn. Girish & Anupama Kshirsagar and Service Projects Director Rtn. Alka Kulkarni, together with Rotary International, RI District 3131, RC Kothrud Charitable Trust and Vasundhara Sustainability Abhiyan. With CSR support from Elkay Silicones Pvt Ltd., the project is funded with Rs. 75 lakhs spread over 3 years.
The Khatpewadi Lake in Pune, located at the source region of Ram Nadi, required restoration to prevent further pollution. The team's objective was to ecologically restore the lake, increase its water storage capacity, preserve and enrich its biodiversity to ensure clean and potable water for local villagers throughout the year. Additionally, the project aims to increase the groundwater level, attract local and migratory birds by creating artificial islands, promote responsible citizenship among villagers through behavioral changes and improve their economic status by generating employment. This initiative will benefit over 3,000 villagers around Ram Nadi.
The restoration efforts include desiltation to increase the lake's depth, removal of unwanted grass, planting and maintenance of locally grown native trees, Murum Pitching, cleaning of the lake and its surroundings from weeds and waste, signage for trees, birds and fish, creation of islands for migratory birds and nesting, as well as training and awareness programs for villagers and caretakers.
On Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Kotpewadi Lake (Ram Nadi Ugam), more than 100 local and native trees were planted. It was heartwarming to see over 70 like-minded, enthusiastic environmental lovers come together for this cause. Rotary club members, volunteers, Elkay employees and Vasundhara Abhiyan supporters planted trees around the lake. The trees will be cared for, fertilized and nurtured by locals under the supervision of Vasundhara Abhiyan volunteers.
The Ramnadi Restoration Mission (RRM) has announced the establishment of the city's first Lotus Lake at the Khatpewadi Lake. Looking ahead, RC Kothrud, Pune plans to continue this impactful project for the next 3 years.
