For Rotary, Gaia or the Earth- is a platform of different communities across the globe, each with different characteristics. We all rotarians are aware that the aim of Rotary is to create lasting positive changes in these communities to make this world a better place to live for all of us. With its network of 1.4 billion rotarians and rotaractorswho are professionals, problem-solvers and basically global friends, strive to achieve the aim of Rotary through their various community and service projects carried out for different communities on different continents.
Global Grants act asa resourcefulsupport in carrying out such effective community and service projects that too in a bolder, bigger and better way as the minimum cost of these projects is USD 30,000/-. The Matching Grant program launched by The Rotary Foundation in 1965 was substituted in 2013 by the Global Grant. This program empowers RI Districts and clubs to plan impactful and sustainable projects through proper community need assessment.
These Global Grant funded service projects are indirectly funded by us rotarians only where 47.5%
of our donations to APF are routed after 3 years as District Designated Fund -DDF and remaining 47.5 %as World Fund. Each DG of the respective RI District decides a policy, depending on the available amount of DDF for that Rotary Year with that district, regarding the distribution of DDF to clubs doing Global Grants. The Rotary Foundation gives 80 % match for this DDFwith effect from July 1, 2021. Earlier it was 100 %match! It is mandatory to have a foreign rotary club as a partner. The foreign club also contributes its club cash, its District’s DDF with its 80 %WF match. In most of the cases, club also needs to contribute its own cash – which may include funds received through CSR and other sources but these would not be matched by TRF.This overall augmentation of funds leads clubs a long way in carrying out service projects influentially. In addition to this financial support, rotarians also contribute their time, expertise and skills. Clubs wanting to participate in a Global Grant funded service project, must attend the Grants Management Seminar conducted by their District just before the start of the New Rotary Year and sign the Club Qualification Memorandum of Understanding between the club and the District.
As a rule, Global Grant funded projects should fall within 7 Focus Areas of Rotary viz., Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Basic Education and Literacy, Maternal and Child Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Economic and Community Development, Disease Prevention and Treatment and the last one added since July1, 2021- Environment.
This year, DG Shital Shah wants maximum clubs to participate in Global Grant projects, either independently or in synergy. About 25 clubs from our District have been doing GG projects independently over many years. Few of them are done in synergy. Best example of Global Grant project carried out in synergy is the Project Mamata during RY 2022-23, wherein 58 clubs had joined in synergy with the host club-Rotary Club of Poona West. This year’s District Global Grant team has been working hard to get smaller rotary clubs to join in synergy with clubs experienced in doing Global Grant projects.
In this Rotary Year,in the month of November, there are Nine grants in Draft stage, Four in Authorization Required stage andFive in Submitted stage, totaling to 18 active Global Grants of RID3131. It’s my appeal to you friends, to please come forward and participate in Global Grant projects. Learnabout and explore this wonderful experience of working in arena of Global Grants. If exploring for the first time, join clubs already doing Global Grant projects. Entire District Global Grant team is ready to help you in each and every stage of it right from planning to applying and further too.
Let’s together make an impactful, sustainable and visible change in the society via Global Grant funded projects……..
Thanks,
